Big News on the Writing Front

I’m thrilled to share that I’ve completed the draft of my book, From Ashes to God, and it’s now in its second round of edits! I know I’ve hinted at this in previous posts, but seeing it progress feels monumental. I’m eager to move forward, though Anne Tyler’s recent CBS Sunday Morning interview reminded me that great writing takes time. At 83, the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of 25 novels, including The Accidental Tourist and Breathing Lessons (one of my favorites), just released her 26th novel, Three Days in June. She writes without social media or writing groups, trusting her craft—a true inspiration as I navigate my own journey.

What’s Next?

While awaiting edits, I’m building my author platform and website, currently at GeorgeAnn Dingus. I’m considering switching to Squarespace or Wordpress for hosting and debating whether a logo would elevate my brand—your input would help (see the poll below!). Next, I’ll explore book cover design, possibly with a professional designer, and plan a pre-launch. With so much to do, I feel an urgency to publish, yet I trust God’s timing. Your prayers for this process would mean the world to me.

My heart shattered when my son Ryan died, but I’ve channeled that grief into From Ashes to God, a raw account of his life as an undiagnosed autistic child and adult, inspired by a supernatural event. Without faith, I could have been lost to grief, but God has been faithful, reaching out through countless people in miraculous ways. I hope this book honors Ryan’s memory and helps others.

I’m also excited to publish Ryan’s book, Hard Hitting Stories of a Hard Hit People, written two years before his passing. It chronicles his ancestors’ hardships and stands as his legacy to Appalachia and future generations. Stay tuned!

Finally, I’m honored that a fellow author has included my writing, alongside other Substack contributors, in his upcoming book. More details soon! As they say, good things come in threes, and I’m grateful for these blessings.

Memorial Day Reflections

On May 25, PBS aired the Memorial Day Concert, hosted for 20 years by Gary Sinise, known as “Lieutenant Dan” in Forrest Gump. This year’s event featured The Rise, a piece composed by Gary’s late son, Mac, who passed at 33 from a rare form of cancer. In a Today Show interview, Gary shared how he discovered unseen messages and files from Mac after his death—a moment that resonated deeply with me. After Ryan’s passing, I found his unpublished writings, many now woven into my book. Like me, Gary feels called to write a book about his son to help others navigate grief, a powerful connection.
